Borneo Local Journey Promotes Sustainable Tourism in East Kutai

As a local tour guide born and raised close to the rivers, forests, and culture of Kalimantan, I have always believed that tourism should bring people closer not only to nature, but also to the communities who live within it.

On Monday, May 15, 2026, Borneo Local Journey visited the office of the East Kutai Tourism Office as part of our commitment to building communication and collaboration for sustainable tourism development in East Kutai, East Kalimantan.

During the visit, I, Alma from Borneo Local Journey, had the opportunity to meet Pak Demmy as the Head of the Destination Division. The meeting was not simply about introducing a travel business, but about sharing our vision as local tourism workers who want to grow together with the community.

As local guides, we see tourism differently. We do not only guide travelers from one destination to another. We also carry stories about the rainforest, rivers, local traditions, and the daily lives of the people who call Borneo home.

East Kutai has extraordinary tourism potential. From river journeys and tropical rainforests to wildlife experiences and cultural encounters, this region offers authentic experiences that many travelers are now searching for. However, we believe tourism can only grow sustainably when local communities are involved directly in the process.

That is why Borneo Local Journey actively works together with Pokdarwis groups, local guides, small businesses, and surrounding communities. We want tourism to create opportunities not only for visitors to enjoy nature, but also for local people to benefit economically while preserving their environment and culture.

For us, communication and openness with the government are important steps toward building trust and long-term collaboration. Tourism becomes stronger when it is built collectively by the government, tourism stakeholders, and local communities.

As someone who guides travelers through the rivers and forests of Borneo, I personally hope more people can experience the beauty of East Kutai in a meaningful way not just as tourists, but as guests who learn, respect, and connect with the people and nature of Kalimantan.

Through collaboration and community-based tourism, Borneo Local Journey hopes to continue supporting sustainable tourism while introducing the authentic spirit of Borneo to the world.
